LENDONWOOD SEEKS VOLUNTEERS FOR “PUT THE GARDEN TO BED” FALL WORKDAY ON OCTOBER 25

Lendonwood Gardens invites volunteers of all ages and abilities to join in the “Put the Garden to Bed” fall workday on Saturday, October 25.  During the annual event, the botanical garden in Grove gets prepped for the winter season.

Grove Rotary members play an important role in the volunteer effort, but the public is invited as well, said Jim Reynolds, who is coordinating the event.  “Lendonwood depends on the generosity of volunteers who give their time and effort to keep this treasure a popular tourist attraction in our community.”

People of all ages and abilities, including families, can lend a hand, Reynolds said.  Helpers typically include several young people, such as members of the Rotary-affiliated Interact organization for high-school students.

Rotarian Terri Shaffar, left, and her mother, Betty Brady, teamed up to apply sealant to a wooden bench at a past Fall Workday at Lendonwood Gardens. This year, the workday will held on Saturday, October 25, starting at 8:30 a.m. Volunteers are invited to participate for any amount of time.

“You don’t have to be an experienced gardener to join in the fun,” he said.  “Just bring your gloves and a willingness to pitch in.  If you can’t stay for the whole period, any amount of time is appreciated.”

Volunteers are asked to gather at 8:30 a.m. by the barn at the back of the garden, for donuts and coffee, as workday tasks are passed out.  Chores range from light work tasks to heavy-equipment operation.

Examples of projects this year include applying pre-emergent weed control, spreading mulch, transplanting ferns, cleaning the greenhouse, and applying leaf-nets to the stream.

In addition, volunteers will be repairing walkways, sealing wooden benches and bridges, re-striping the parking lot, repairing fence, removing dead wood, planting pansies, removing underbrush, and cleaning the pond, among other tasks.

Supplies for the various projects will be available, although volunteers should bring their gloves and wear comfortable work clothes.  The workday is usually completed by about 2 p.m.

Lunch will be provided by Arvest Bank of Grove, Grandwood Assisted Living and Lendonwood board members.

In case of bad weather, “Put the Gardens to Bed” will be held on Saturday, November 1.  For more information about the October 25 fall workday, contact Lendonwood Gardens at 918-786-2938.

Lendonwood is an eight-acre public botanical garden located at 1308 Har-Ber Road in Grove.  Major collections include azaleas, rhododendrons, dogwoods, Japanese maple trees, hostas, daylilies and evergreen trees. The garden draws visitors from throughout the U.S. and around the world.
