The Jana Jae Fiddle Camp and Music Festival brings musicians and entertainment to the Grand Lake area over Labor Day weekend, August 30—September 1. All events at Snider’s Camp, located just south of Grove on the beautiful bank of Grand Lake O’ the Cherokees, are free to the public with great food and entertainment on Friday and Saturday nights. The food line opens at 6:30 p.m. with delicious barbeque on Friday night, August 30 and a fish fry on Saturday night, August 31– food is $8 a plate. Bring your lawn chairs and enjoy good food, great entertainment and jammin’!!
A super weekend with fiddles, cellos, guitars, mandolins and more is planned with outstanding instructors including Jana Jae, founder of Grand Lake Festivals and First Lady of Country Fiddlin’ and 20+ terrific instructors – great players and master teachers! All acoustic instruments are welcome! A Guitar Workshop for the entire weekend has been added! Participants can sign up for the guitar workshop with two fabulous guitar coaches, Jim Garling and Rex Gillentine, who will share great lead lines, chords, chord patterns and voicings for different styles of music. Jim is multi-talented singer and guitarist with tons of talent to share, and Rex is top of the line in contest style backup and fabulous chord patterns, there’s none better! One to two hour workshops will be given by Russ Weeks who will share fabulous licks on the mandolin. Participants will also have the opportunity to join resident arranger, Dennis Neff, as he illustrates multiple variations on fiddle harmonies. Music for violins, violas, cellos and guitar will be provided so that students can play through the numerous harmony examples that Mr. Neff has prepared. Workshop and take-home materials will be provided for students of all playing abilities. Rick Morton, stellar musician and music teacher, has become a favorite instructor will return by popular demand working with approximately 20 other outstanding participants.
Talent galore is available for your entertainment each evening at Snider’s Camp. The Amateur Fiddle Contest highlights the evening on Saturday and is always great fun for all. For those not enrolled in the Fiddle Camp, registration for this contest is $5 with cash awards going to the top three winners in six divisions.
Daytime fiddle workshops will be held at the Grove Civic Center on Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fiddle instructors will demonstrate and teach various music styles including Celtic, old-time, bluegrass, swing and contest. There will be interesting and entertaining sessions as the participants learn to play in jams, put on a successful performance, compete in contests, handle stage fright, play harmony for twin or triple fiddles and much more. All participants will be featured in the Fiddle Camp finale on Sunday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. at the Civic Center . Admission is free to all events.
This Festival is made possible by volunteers of Grand Lake Festivals, Inc., many local and area sponsors, the area media, with the assistance of the Oklahoma Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts and is a special event as the work of learning becomes fun as the participants share their talents with each other and the spectators. The Jana Jae Fiddle Camp is held annually over Labor Day weekend with daytime activities held at the Grove Civic Center on Sat. and Sun., August 31 & September 1 and at Snider’s Camp Fri. and Sat. evenings August 30 & 31.
