COLCORD, MAINTAINING ITS HERITAGE

Echos2James Riley Wilson could not have realized that, years in the future, he would inadvertently have a hand in the creation of Colcord, a community of 800 located in southeastern  Delaware County.  During the summer of 1901, Wilson who lived near Thomasville, Missouri, 20 miles from the Arkansas border, had decided to join his brother.  In Indian Territory.  Selling his farm and loading his worldly possessions into two wagons and a buggy, James, his wife, two daughters and a son,  followed  trails southwest across the Boston Mountains to a farm area about 10 miles west of Cherokee City, Arkansas, as the crow flies.

The location where he chose to settle was in a region that held a great degree of historical significance to Northeastern Oklahoma.  Cherokee Indians, the “old settlers,” had moved into the region in the early 1830s, followed by some of the survivors of the Trail of Tears during the summer of 1839.  Many had stopped there after receiving “bread money” and establishing homes and farms.  Later, in the 1840s, the Hildebrand/Beck mill was constructed further south on Flint Creek.  During the ebb and flow of the Civil War in Indian Territory, the mill had been taken over by Union troops and used as a prison for Confederates.  After the war in 1878, the mill would be the scene of the killing of Polly Beck and the accused Zeke Proctor would be at the center of another historic incident, the Goingsnake Massacre.

This history may have made an impression on James Wilson, but after his arrival he became more concerned about traveling all the way to Cherokee City for supplies and mail.  So, in the spring of 1902 he and his wife opened a small grocery store and later added dry goods.  The venture proved to be successful and, since the nearest post office was at Cherokee City, Wilson acquired the necessary signatures to apply for one at the store.  His application had indicated that the post office be named Ross for his son.  But apparently James penmanship was difficult to read because when the approved application was returned the post office had been designated as Row.  Despite the mix up on the name Row filled a need for the surrounding area.  In addition to Wilson’s store and the post office, Row boasted a barber shop, corn and grist mill, blacksmith shop, small hotel, and a millinery store.  There also was a school house that doubled as a church on weekends.  The community thrived in the early decades of the 1900s, but that would soon change.

In 1915, Charles Albert Burbage had been employed to carry mail from the post office twice weekly to its 85 rural customers. As time passed, Charles began acquiring land and in the early 1920s when an announcement was made that a state road, Highway 116, would be developed one mile south of Row, the enterprising Burbage designed a 65 acre town plat adjacent to it.  The road would connect U.S. Highway 59 with Gentry, Arkansas and Burbage saw considerable economic possibilities for a new community.  Time passed, the community grew as he anticipated and became known as “Little Tulsa.”  In the meantime, an Oklahoma City millionaire, Charles Colcord had purchased a large ranch west of town.  Colcord, a pioneer who had participated in both the Unassigned Land Run of 1889 and the Cherokee Outlet Run of 1893, later amassing a fortune in oil production and was a founding father of Oklahoma City   More pertinent to Little Tulsa was the fact that he employed numerous members of the community at the ranch.  Consequently, to honor him, citizens of the community of Little Tulsa renamed it Colcord.

By this time it seemed obvious, because of its prime location on Highway 116, that Colcord would grow, but that Row would not.  Consequently, members of the Colcord community petitioned to have the Row post office moved to Colcord and, after considerable resistance, it was moved February 1st 1930.  Row residents contended that it was “stolen in the night,” but in reality moving after closing and before opening was a United States postal regulation designed to prevent any interruption in service.   After that, most of Row’s businesses also moved which might be considered to be James Riley Wilson’s contribution to the development of Colcord.

In many respects Colcord mirrors other communities in Northeastern Oklahoma but there is one unusual exception that sets it apart the Talbot Library and Museum. Previously, reference was made to Cherokee settlers and some of the unique history involving pioneers in the region surrounding Colcord.   Through the efforts of the Virgil Talbot family and community members that legacy is continually being reinforced.   Established in 1987, the museum includes several outbuildings of historical interest and the library provides outstanding opportunities for historical and genealogical research involving early settlers.  Another unique opportunity for reflection and study involving Echoes From The Past  in the Cradle of Oklahoma.

Dr. Mark Grigsby (on left), and NEO President Dr. Jeff Hale

Miami, Okla. – Dr. Mark Grigsby, department chair of math and science at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College, received the 2013 Excellence in Education Award from the Miami Area Chamber of Commerce. To receive this honor, the educator must have demonstrated exceptional and innovative capabilities in their educational fields. The eligible educators ranged from public, private, charter, and parochial schools.

“Dr. Grigsby is passionate about education and creating learning opportunities for NEO students,” said Bethene Fahnestock, vice president of academic affairs. “He has worked diligently with area partners to meet the needs of our community through education. I am excited that Dr. Grigsby was recognized for these outstanding efforts.”

Grigsby has been an NEO instructor for 26 years, and for 17 of those years he has served as the department chair of math and science. He is an advisor for students majoring in health science, and oversees Construction Management and Process Technology or PTEC programs at NEO.

Grigsby has been responsible for developing the new PTEC program at NEO, which prepares students for careers in manufacturing. He wrote a large portion of the Department of Education grant application that was funded through the Shawnee Tribe for the PTEC program. He will serve as the principle investigator who oversees the grant. Grigsby is also involved with the improvement of water quality in Tar Creek by working with the Peoria Indian Tribe on a grant to create a wetland on the NEO campus.

Grigsby has not only served the community, but has helped individual students. He has helped students with paid internships for summer research with the National Great Rivers Research and Education Center for the past two summers.

Grigsby said, “I believe learning should be fun, and that all students should be treated fairly and with respect.”

One nominator said, “He has excelled not only as a teacher, but as a community member wanting to improve the natural resources in Ottawa County and helping students achieve their goals.”

ASSIMILATION AND THE PERFECT STORM – a series of the Grand River Historical Socitey

echos 2Ever since the United States government was formed its Congress would address what frequently was called “the Indian Problem.”  The issues revolved around expansion of this new nation, acquiring lands that various tribes claimed, and ways and means of assimilating them into white society.  There are countless Indian chiefs who attempted to resolve this dilemma and still maintain the identity of their tribe.  This is the story of one.

It was 1866 and Oochalata, a full blood Cherokee who lived at the headwaters of Brushy Creek southeast of today’s Jay, had just been selected as district judge.  Born in Georgia to Long Charles, a full blood Cherokee and a white woman whose name is lost in history, Oochalata had survived the Trail of Tears.   As a young man, he had been heavily influenced by the teachings of the Reverend Evan Jones who founded the Baptist Mission near Westville.  Oochalata was also a charter member of the Keetoowah Society that Jones organized in 1859.  The Keetoowah consisted mostly of full bloods opposed to slavery and who supported Cherokee traditions.  During the early stages of the Civil War, Oochalata and most of the full blood Cherokees switched from the Confederacy to supporting the Union.  He joined the Third Indian Home Guards under the command of Colonel Lewis Downing, who later became Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation.  Shortly after the war and with Downing’s support, Oochalata was elected as judge. Three years later he became a member of the Cherokee Senate and, it was then that he decided to change his name to Charles Thompson.  Adopting a portion of his Indian name “chala” as Charles, he chose the surname of Thompson to honor his Senate predecessor Dr. Jeter Lynch Thompson.  He would serve four terms as senator, 1869, 1871, 1873, and later in 1877.  Despite all of the negative circumstances during the earlier years of his life, Charles Thompson had risen above them, become well grounded in the Nations politics and in 1875 he was elected Principal Chief.  It was during this time that he witnessed the beginning of the final stages of what would become “the perfect storm” leading to both the dissolution of his nation and assimilation.

Following the war, reconstruction in the South preoccupied Washington and the devastation that had occurred in Indian Territory was practically ignored.  John Ross, Lewis Downing and William Ross, Thompsons predecessors after the war, had addressed circumstances to the best of their ability and reconstruction within the Nation had slowly progressed.  However by 1875, Washington had once again turned its attention to the “Indian problem” and the potential of Indian Territory.  Members of Congress, previous authors of an untold number of broken treaties who also chose to ignore Indian allegiances with the Union during the war, approved two railroads constructed in 1871 involving millions of acres of Cherokee land.  Although western farm land had been available through the Homestead Act, after the War much of that land had been settled and, emboldened by the actions of Congress thousands of squatters began moving in to Indian Territory.

Communicating with Congress, Thompson first addressed the railroad investors, “whose goal was to seize millions of acres of land promised by Congress…and robbing us.”  Regarding the issue of squatters he noted, “There are now thousands of intruders squatted upon our lands” and he requested having them removed, only to be rebutted or ignored.  In another futile attempt, Thompson prepared 138 pages of citations from all of the treaties with the government declaring that the Nation had the right to determine who was a Cherokee citizen.  And as the tide for the perfect storm continued to rise, there also was a constant battle to thwart organizing a territorial form of government in Indian Territory. Still further complicating Thompson’s efforts to maintain sovereignty was the fact that prominent members of the Cherokee Nation, men like E.C. Boudinet, the founder of Vinita, supported integration into the white society.

Despite support from the Keetoowahs, Charles Thompson was not re-elected for a second term in 1879.  He had not been successful in stemming the tide of assimilation, nor would his seven successors as Principal Chief.  The final blow to Cherokee independence before the waves of that perfect storm came tumbling down was Congressional approval of the Dawes Act dividing land into parcels that here-to-for belonged to the Nation.

Neither Charles Thompson nor his predecessors or successors could stem the white tide Native Americans were soon swept up in the perfect storm of integration and into the prevailing society.  The perfect storm was over, however meaningful assimilation would take awhile longer.

libertyAttorney and former prosecutor, KrisAnne Hall, will be speaking at the Trinity Baptist Church on Thursday, February 13, at 6:30 p.m.  Her program in Grove is being sponsored by Get America Back.

KrisAnne Hall was fired after teaching the Constitution.  She would not sacrifice liberty for a paycheck.  She is a disabled veteran of the US Army, a Russian linguist, a mother, a pastor’s wife and a patriot.  She travels the country and teaches the Constitution and the history that gave us our founding documents.

Her talks focus on the “genealogy” of the Constitution – the 700 year history and five foundational documents that are the very roots of American Liberty.

KrisAnne was born and raised in St. Louis, MO.  She received her undergraduate degree in Bio-Chemistry from Blackburn College in 1991 and her J.D. from the University of Florida, Levin College of Law.  She worked for several years as a state prosecutor and two years with a prominent law firm defending religious liberty and first amendment rights.  She now resides in Florida with her husband, Chris (a pastor and former foreign language instructor for the US Navy) and her adopted son, Colton.

She is the author of “Not a Living Breathing Document: Reclaiming Our Constitution, and the DVD series “The Roots of Liberty: The Historic foundations of The Bill of Rights,” and “Bedtime Stories for Budding Patriots,” and “Essential Stories for Junior Patriots.”

KrisAnne was awarded the Freedom Fighter award by Americans for Prosperity, the Certificate of Achievement from the Sons of the Revolution for her defense of Liberty, and the Congressman James Blair Award for Defending the Constitution.

You can find more information about her at www.krisannehall.com.  The event is free and open to the public.  Cyndi McArtor, with Get America Back, commented that “If you enjoyed the recent “Give Me Liberty Tour,” which was presented in Grove, you will find this event equally enjoyable and extremely informative.”  According to Cyndi, Grove is very fortunate to have KrisAnne Hall come to our town and provide us with the opportunity to learn more about our Constitution.

Leonard Noel & Joyce Burns

Leonard Noel & Joyce Burns

The center piece is a tender, romantic comedy that adroitly explores relationships between men and women in their golden years. “The Last Romance” by Joe DiPietro, a one act play, mixes humor with heartbreak and laughter with opera.  Its premise is that a crush can make anyone feel young again—even a widower named Ralph, played by veteran Playmaker, Leonard Noel. On an ordinary day in a routine life, Ralph decides to take a different path on his daily walk—one that leads him to an unexpected second chance at love. Relying on a renewed boyish charm, Ralph attempts to woo the cordial but distant, Carol, played by Joyce Burns (whom The Playmakers welcome back after 8 years). Defying Carol’s reticence—and the jealousy of his lonely sister  (Sunny Uttley) —Ralph embarks on the trip of a lifetime, and regains a happiness that seemed all but lost. “The Last Romance” is a heart-warming comedy about the transformative power of love.

Donna & Phil Lawrence

Two short comedy sketches are also included in the program, performed by real-life married couples. The Rev. Philip Lawrence and his wife Donna will present the first short play, “Post-Its  (Notes on a marriage)” by Paul Dooley & Winnie Holzman.  It views a marriage through a brilliantly clever theatrical device– the messages that the couple hastily scrawl for one another on Post-It Notes throughout their time together.  As the process develops, their relationship grows from their first night together all throughout their married life. The play stresses the importance of marriage partners taking the time to be with each

County Commissioner Tom Sanders and his wife Nancy, a former Grove High School teacher, tell us the quirky short story of a missing husband, a detective, and a somewhat batty wife who makes cement birdbaths for a hobby in “Chocolate,” by Frederick Stroppel.  Was there a murder? Is the spot on the floor blood…or something else? Can you trust anything they say?

NEO will “Shoot for the Cure” Monday, Feb. 17

image008Miami, Oklahoma – Thursday, Jan. 30, 2014 – The Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College (NEO), Lady Norse Basketball team will host its annual Pink game on Monday, Feb. 17, 2014 at 6 p.m. against Eastern. This year’s theme is “Keep Calm and Shoot for the Cure.” This game is part of a nation-wide breast cancer awareness event and is sponsored by Freeman Health Care Systems and Integris Baptist Regional. Individuals who wear pink to the game will get in free. The NEO athletic department is selling pink tee shirts for $5 that read, “Keep Calm and Shoot for the Cure.” The proceeds benefit students who cannot afford mammograms.

NEO Athletics and NEO Women & Friends have partnered together again to host the bra decorating contest. The winner will be announced at halftime of the men’s game.

“The purpose of the bra decorating contest is to increase awareness of breast cancer in a fun way, and to raise more financial support for this very worthy cause,” said Donna Hale, first lady of NEO. “Our clubs and organizations do a great job getting involved, and this year I am pleased to say that our event is reaching out into the community. We have more than 10 area businesses signed up to participate with a decorated bra. This means even more awareness for this very worthy cause, and it also makes the competition a little tougher. We are really looking forward to seeing all the creations.”

Area businesses who signed up to compete include: The Coffee Table, Indulgence Salon, Salon 504, Buffalo Run Casino, Arvest Bank, Osborn Drugs, Integris Gift Shop, B. Oliver’s, Metal Fab, Wyandotte Nation, and First National Bank.

The bras will be on display at the game, and everyone is encouraged to vote for their favorite bra by donating money. These proceeds will also fund mammograms for NEO students who do not have insurance. Breast cancer victims have a 90 percent survival rate if detected early.

“This is an annual event for us, and to have the support of our community just makes it even more special,” said Jim Rowland, head coach for the Lady Norse. “Sadly this is a disease that attacks women of all ages and races.  Almost everyone knows someone who has been affected by breast cancer. I hope everyone will come out and support this cause.”

The NEO Lady Norse started this event in 2007 as part of the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association to honor Sandra “Kay” Yow.  In 1987, Yow, head coach of the North Carolina State Wolfpack women’s basketball team, was diagnosed with breast cancer. In 1988, Yow coached the US Women’s basketball team to an Olympic gold medal. Yow was inducted into the Women’s basketball Hall of Fame in 2000 and the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2002. On July 11, 2007, Yow received the inaugural Jimmy V ESPY Award for Perseverance. At the time of her death in 2009, she ranked the fifth winningest active NCAA Division I women’s basketball coach. NEO Lady Norse is proud to honor this accomplished coach.

Miami, Oklahoma –  Since Dec. 2013, the Agriculture Ambassadors, a leadership program at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College (NEO), have been volunteering to read to the elementary students of Washington Elementary School in Miami, Okla. to help the kids improve their reading skills.

Vicki Lewis, the principal of Washington Elementary, said she loves what the student ambassadors of NEO are doing for the kids.

“The Ag Ambassadors are a great benefit to Washington Elementary,” Lewis said. “Our school motto ‘Washington Elementary students are on track to be college, career and citizen ready’ is shown daily in these NEO students showing up to help our students. Besides the help in reading they offer our students, they also serve as role models in giving back to the community.”

NEO Agriculture Ambassadors volunteer at Washington Elementary, where agriculture instructors Alisen Anderson and McKenzie Nygren cosponsor the leadership program.

NEO’s Department Chair of Agriculture, Dr. Shannon Cunningham, started the organization in 2007 as a way for the agriculture department to have representation by NEO students who rise to the top as leaders within the department. The group is only for sophomores, who are selected based on their application, leadership skills, integrity, and character during their freshmen year.

“We use this group as means to reach out to our community, FFA chapters, State and National FFA Conventions, recruiting trips to High Schools and more,” Cunningham said. “What this group is doing with reading to students is exactly what it is designed to do. In addition, we do a lot of our own recruitment in our department, and I wanted to have a group of reliable, trustworthy, and respected agriculture students who we could send out with our faculty members to recruit new students, and share their story about NEO.”

Agriculture Ambassadors are students majoring in agriculture and are selected based on their academic success (grade point average), community involvement and reputation amongst peers to represent the department. These students are advocates for agriculture and participate in events including national and state FFA convention, Aggie Olympics, student body government meetings, and various events throughout the year.

“This weekly responsibility is rewarding for our NEO Ag Ambassadors because it is not only beneficial for the children, but our students too. It’s like weekly therapy for them to see the improvements being made and to watch the growth and confidence of the kids in need of the attention and help with reading,” Anderson said.

Washington Elementary has a poverty rate of 80 percent, which is recognized by the student ambassadors. They have been enthusiastic to take this weekly responsibility as an opportunity to learn more about the kids individually, making the overall experience rewarding and more personal.

“Ag Ambassadors are encouraged to find opportunities in the community where they can impact and educate others. In cooperation with Washington Elementary, we hope to cultivate positive experiences for both the students and our ambassadors,” Nygren said. “The continued success of the agriculture program at NEO relies heavily on community involvement, and we appreciate this opportunity to assist students with their reading skills.”

GRAND LAKE GOLF REPORT-Congrats to Bubba Watson

PGA Report

GRAND LAKE GOLF REPORT-Congrats to Bubba Watson , Congrats to Bubba Watson who just won the Riviera at Pacific Palisades, CA. The week before he was leader up until the last hole where he lost by missing a 5 footer (just like us).

GOLF LAST WEEK

I played golf yesterday with Bill Sanford, Bill Slepka and Connard Luper. Finally the weather was accommodating. I saw Roy Rice, Ron Young and Tarik Masri out there too. In another group I saw Doug Ohlstrom and another Tim and Dan Moore. It was great seeing folks out there soaking up some heat.

GOLF TIP OF THE WEEK

QUIT trying to kill the ball! That is much easier said than done. Here is a quick tip on how to calm down your swing. First determine at what point at the top of your biggest is your 100%. Then hit the next 2 or 3 balls with an 80% backswing. I GUARANTEE better ball striking and accuracy. The real surprise is that the ball goes as far, if not further.

GOLF JOKE of the WEEK
This is not golf but too good not to share:

Please join me in remembering a great icon of the entertainment
community. The Pillsbury Doughboy died yesterday of a yeast infection
and trauma complications from being repeatedly poked in the belly. He
was 71.

Doughboy was buried in a lightly greased coffin. Dozens of celebrities turned out to pay their respects, including Mrs. Butterworth, Hungry Jack, the California Raisins, Betty Crocker, the Hostess Twinkies, and Captain Crunch. The grave site was piled high with flours.
Aunt Jemima delivered the eulogy and lovingly described Doughboy as a man who never knew how much he was kneaded. Born and bread in Minnesota, Doughboy rose quickly in show business, but his later life was filled with turnovers. He was not considered a very smart cookie, wasting much of his dough on half-baked schemes. Despite being a little flaky at times, he lived to be a crusty old man and was considered a positive roll model for millions.
Doughboy is survived by his wife Play Dough, three children: John Dough, Jane Dough and Dosey Dough, plus they had one in the oven. He is also survived by his elderly father, Pop Tart.

The funeral was held at 3:50 for about 20 minutes.

P.S.: If this made you smile for even a brief second, please rise to the
occasion and take time to pass it on and share that smile with someone
else who may be having a crumby day and kneads a lift.

KEEP IT IN THE MIDDLE !

THE FIRST TRAIL OF TEARS- Early Arrivals in 1832 Western Cherokees Grand Lake Business Journal

The Trail of Tears during the winter of 1838-39, resulting in the removal of massive numbers of Cherokees from Georgia is a well documented and publicized historic event.  Prompted by the Treaty of New Echota, approved by a minority of Cherokee delegates in 1835, forced removal followed. That horrific event later led to assassinations and divisions within the Cherokee Nation that still reverberate.  But it wasn’t the first forced removal of Cherokees by the federal government that occurred ten years earlier.

THE FIRST TRAIL OF TEARS-  Early Arrivals in 1832 Western Cherokees . This earlier trek to what had recently been designated “Indian Territory” involved smaller groups ranging from 40 or 50 families beginning in 1829 to as many as a contingent of 600 continuing through April of 1832, an estimated 3,000 in all according to Arkansas newspaper records and missionary journals.  The reports also indicated that many of those migrants were destitute, so poor they sold their Indian Territory claims to speculators just to buy food and supplies.  But who were these Cherokees and what prompted their journey?

These were Western Cherokees, some of whom could trace their origins through oral history to eight or nine hundred years before in what would later become the states of Arkansas and Missouri.  Others migrated from the east in the 1700s when Europeans began arriving in the new world.  More recent arrivals came in the early 1800s due to unrest in Tennessee and Georgia. These Western Cherokees had become a powerful force west of the Mississippi River by the mid-1700s. And through treaties in 1817 and 1819, the United States recognized them as the Cherokee Nation West.  One estimate indicated that at least 30,000 Cherokees lived just in Arkansas at the time.  By 1813 the number of Western Cherokees had become so large, the federal government assigned them their own agent, William Lovely. The second treaty with the United States in 1819 had formally separated the Western from the Eastern Cherokee, recognizing them as an independent nation.  John Jolly was elected as Principal Chief that same year and the new nation set about formulating its own constitution and laws.

The initial events that precipitated the first Trail of Tears in 1829 for the Western Cherokee somewhat mirror the Treaty of New Echota that later created a similar problem for the Eastern Cherokee.  During the spring of 1828, a delegation was sent to Washington to address several issues involving unfulfilled treaty agreements.   Without any authority, part of that delegation proceeded to negotiate an exchange of land in Arkansas for land in the newly designated Indian Territory.  That agreement was rushed through legislative  procedures and immediately approved by the United States government.  Predictably, when the delegates returned home the Western Cherokee government declared it null and void, but the government ignored them and proceeded with the exchange.  However, this is where the similarity between the origins of the two nations’ “trails” end.

In 1828 and 1829, the Western Cherokees, under the supervision of Chief Jolly relocated their government offices from Piney, Arkansas to Tahlontiskee, Indian Territory near Deep Creek, south of present day Gore.   Perhaps because gold was discovered in Georgia that same year the federal government may have been preoccupied, so the task of actual removal of Western Cherokees became the responsibilities of the states of Missouri and Arkansas.  Both passed legislation requiring tribesman, some whose families had occupied the land for a century, to show written evidence of title, which of course did not exist.  In Missouri, laws were passed preventing Indians from “roaming and hunting.” Another required them to divest themselves of “Indian style” clothing. Although a variety of similar insidious laws were passed, the two states could not muster the resources to enforce them, so while a small percent of Western Cherokees were forced to move, most did not. Confirming those earlier estimates, an 1851 “Old Settlers Roll,” indicated there were only 3,000 Western Cherokees living in Indian Territory by 1839.

In contrast, not only were the Eastern Cherokees harassed by the state of Georgia and the federal government for several years, Andrew Jackson, who campaigned for Indian removal, was elected in 1830.  Consequently, the might of the United States government was focused on the forced removal of the Eastern Cherokees.

So, the impact of these two Trails of Tears differed considerably.  Still, for the next 25 years members of these two Cherokee Nations attempted to work together.  A government would be organized, a school system developed and living conditions would improve…until the Civil War. THE FIRST TRAIL OF TEARS-  Early Arrivals in 1832 Western Cherokees.

senateOK Senate approves measure to help Oklahoma’s small businesses

OKLAHOMA CITY – On Tuesday, the Senate approved legislation that would help  Oklahoma’s small businesses more businesses qualify for the Small Employer Quality Jobs Incentive Act.  Senate Bill 1329, by Sen. Ron Sharp, would remove population limits which currently make the incentive inaccessible to small businesses in Oklahoma’s larger populated areas. OK Senate approves measure to help Oklahoma’s small businesses.

“The legislature didn’t realize that they were leaving out small communities in Oklahoma, Tulsa and Cleveland counties when they enacted this legislation in 2011,” said Sharp, R-Shawnee.  “My bill will level the playing field and allow more Oklahoma businesses, which meet the other requirements of the act, to take advantage of this great incentive.”

Currently to qualify for the incentive, businesses must be located in counties with populations of less than 200,000 or be located in an “opportunity zone”.  SB 1329 would remove that population requirement.

“Small business owners shouldn’t be punished because they live in highly-populated, urban areas.  They need this incentive just as much as the mom and pop shops in smaller, rural towns,” said Sharp.  “I want to thank my colleagues for their support of this measure and for fighting for small business owners throughout the state.”

The Small Employer Quality Jobs Incentive Act allows qualifying small businesses with 90 employees or less to receive up to a five percent cash-back incentive for up to seven years to locate or expand in Oklahoma.

SB 1329 now moves to the House to be heard in committee, to help Oklahoma’s small businesses

Grand Lake Chamber Monthly Meeting to Feature Lt. Governor

Todd Lamb GRAND LAKE BUSINESS JOURNALThe regularly scheduled meeting for the Grand Lake Area Chamber of Commerce is scheduled for Thursday, February 20th at the South Grand Lake Christian Church. The church is located just North of Langley on Hwy 82 and two blocks east on  E 350 Rd. Doug Cox Integris In Oklahoma, third graders must be able to demonstrate sufficient reading skills before being passed to fourth grade. Why did your Legislature pass such a requirement? The facts about reading skills and command of the English language being the greatest predictors for success in America speak for themselves:

Seven out of every 10 prison inmates cannot read above a fourth-grade level.

Eighty-eight percent of 19-year-old dropouts were unable to read proficiently by third grade.

Students who can’t read by the end of third grade are four times more likely to drop out of high school.

Seventy-five percent of Americans receiving food stamps dropped out of school.

Those are just a few of the reasons the Legislature encourages our schools to concentrate on reading skills.

Did you know that Oklahoma has a teen-pregnancy problem? Last year, Oklahoma teenagers gave birth to 5,233 babies. That represents more teen mothers than the number of freshman girls entering OSU and OU during the fall semester. We are number two in the United States in teen-birth rate.  That is the reason I do not support legislation that limits access to contraception. It is also the reason I support sex education. Teen mothers struggle to be good parents. When they fall short in abuse or neglect, taxpayers often pay for increased crime, prison and foster care costs.

The number of Oklahoma Highway Patrolmen is close to a 20-year low.  As Oklahoma’s population quickly approaches four million people, the OHP is strained to keep up with the myriad of demands of a growing state. The OHP entry salary level is less than the seven regional states around us, and lower than many city police officers make in Oklahoma. I recently voted to increase the monthly expense allowance troopers can use for things such as uniforms and cleaning, practice ammunition, etc. I also join with our governor in supporting a trooper pay increase.

Oklahoma has 269,700 horses. These horses are used for recreation, racing and rodeo. When coupled with the support industries, such as veterinarians, feed stores, farriers, etc, the horse industry has a major economic impact on our state. Since the passage of the state question that allowed betting on horse racing, the tax revenue from the horse industry generated for state and local governments has grown from $49 million to approximately $100 million each year.
