Grove Humane Society Tips to Keep Pets Safe During Fireworks

DukeHello.  My name is Duke.  I’m a lovable, adorable Shih Tzu available for adoption at the Humane Society of Grove and Grand Lake.  With July 4th coming up, fireworks might be pretty, but they can frighten your family pets.  I urge pet owners to take these simple precautions to make sure their pets are safe over the Independence Day holiday.
  • Keep pets inside.  The best situation for your pet is to be at home with you, but if your holiday plans take you elsewhere, it is best to leave your pet inside the house.  Frightened animals will try to seek refuge from noise and confusion by jumping fences or running away.  Keeping them indoors will assure that they won’t get lost.
  • If you have an animal that is nervous or predisposed to stress, consult your veterinarian about having tranquilizers on hand during the July 4th holiday.
  • Crate-trained animals should be allowed to be loose in part of the house, as these animals can get hurt trying to escape their crate.
  • Make sure your pets are wearing proper identification.  Just in case your pet does run away during a fireworks display, your chances of finding the animal are much better if it is wearing an ID tag.  Cats should always wear break-away collars that will allow them to get free if the collar gets caught on something.
  • If your pet gets lost, begin a search immediately.  Contact the Grove Humane Society or your local animal control to see if your lost pet has been turned over to these animal welfare organizations.

Contact the Grove Humane Society shelter today to learn more about Duke and about all of the wonderful animals available for adoption.  Contact the shelter at 918-786-7630 or email hsgrove@att.net.  Visit its website at www.humanesocietyofgrove.com or follow the group on Facebook.com/Humane Society of Grove for pictures and stories of available animals.  The Humane Society of Grove and Grand Lake is a non-profit, no-kill animal rescue organization relying entirely on private donations to operate.  To make a tax-deductible donation, please mail a check to P.O. Box 451205, Grove, OK 74345 or donate online.
