GOLF JOKE of the WEEK

From Patty Northrup, NOT GOLF BUT WORTHY
…..This morning on the Interstate, I looked over to my left and there was a Woman In a brand new Cadillac doing 65 mph. With her face up next to her rear view mirror putting on her eyeliner. I looked away for a couple seconds…to continue shaving And when I looked back, she was halfway over in my lane, still working on that makeup. As a man, I don’t scare easily. But she scared me so much I had to put on my seat belt. And I dropped my electric shaver, which knocked the donut out of my other hand. In all The confusion of trying to straighten out the car using my knees against the steering wheel, It knocked My cell phone away from my ear which fell Into my coffee which was between my legs, splashed and burned my privates. Ruined the phone, Soaked my trousers and disconnected an Important call. Darn women drivers!

KEEP IT IN THE MIDDLE !

Northeastern Oklahoma A & M College Student Body Government officers attend Higher Ed Day

Miami, Oklahoma – Thursday, Feb. 12, 2015 – Representatives from Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College (NEO) participated again in this year’s Higher Education Day at the State Capitol Tuesday, Feb. 10. NEO’s Student Body Government (SBG) team had the opportunity to travel to Oklahoma City and have dinner and discuss emerging topics in higher education with legislators and Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education.

“The NEO students appreciated the opportunity to discuss issues that are directly affecting them with those who are charged with dealing with the issues. On behalf of NEO, we would all like to say thank you to Representatives Loring and Cox and Senators Shaw and Wyrick for welcoming NEO at Higher Education Day,” said Amy Ishmael, vice president of student affairs and enrollment management. “The students had an opportunity to see state government first hand and have a greater appreciation for what these individuals do on a daily basis.”
The officers started their Oklahoma City visit by meeting with State Legislators from the House and Senate, the Chancellor of Higher Education, OSU A&M Board of Regents and staff. The students participated in a discussion concerning higher education topics including Oklahoma’s Promise, guns on campus, and other issues facing Oklahoma’s college students. The following day the students toured the Capitol and sat on the house floor as concerns with higher education were expressed.

Some of the topics discussed were funding higher education and weapons on campus. The NEO team lobbied their concerns and the opinions of the students who are currently facing these challenges in today’s higher education environment.

“The fact the Representative Hoskins along with others emphasized this Capitol building was our building, and we had the power to make change was very motivating, not only to students furthering their education, but to everyone,” said Hanna Minson, SBG vice president.

The speakers included Chancellor Glen D. Johnson, Governor Mary Fallin and Lt. Gov. Todd Lamb, and students from multiple colleges across Oklahoma who also had the chance to voice their opinion on the House floor.

The group from NEO included:
• Amy Ishmael, Vice President for Student Affairs
• Tim Taylor, President
• Hanna Minson, Vice President
• Mattie Moore, Secretary
• Sabrina Terrell, Treasurer
• Breanna Barngrover, Senator at Large
• Sydney Reynolds, Senator at Large
• Josh Warren, Senator at Large

GOLF TIP OF THE WEEK

SOFT LANDING CHIP SHOT

For a soft landing chip shot, open the club face at address, actually set feet a little open too. The real secret is to use your wrist cock (break) right off of the ball which creates a steeper angle. Also, keep your hands well ahead of the club head.

GOLF JOKE of the WEEK

GOLF AND WHAT IT ALL MEANS – thanks Jim Darby

Golf! You hit down to make the ball go up.You swing left and the ball goes right.

The lowest score wins, on top of that, the winner buys the drinks.
Golf is harder than baseball. In Golf, you have to play your foul balls.
If you find you do not mind playing Golf in the rain, the snow, even during a hurricane, here’s a valuable tip …your life is in trouble.
Golfers who try to make everything perfect before taking the shot rarely make a perfect shot.
A ‘gimme’ can best be defined as an agreement between two golfers …neither of whom can putt very well.
An interesting thing about Golf is that no matter how badly you play, it is always possible to get worse.
Golf’s a hard game to figure. One day you’ll go out and slice it and shank it, hit into all the traps and miss every green. The next day you go out and for no reason at all you really stink.
If your best shots are the practice swing and the ‘gimme putt’, you might wish to reconsider this game.
Golf is the only sport where the most feared opponent is you.
Golf is like marriage, If you take yourself too seriously it won’t work, and both are expensive.
The best wood in most amateurs’ bags is the pencil.

Cox’s Corner by State Representative Doug Cox, M.D.

Things have started off fast and furious the first couple of weeks of the legislative session with bills making their way through small committees before going to a vote by all 101 members of the House. Some bills pass committee, some do not. That is one reason why of the more than 2,000 bills at the beginning of session, only a few hundred make it through the process to become law.

Doug Cox5   While the various bills about laws get all of the publicity – especially emotional issues such as those dealing with abortion, gays, and guns – the most important work of the Legislature are the bills that craft the state budget. The budget we craft is what funds the core functions of government, such as roads, education, public safety (Highway Patrol, prisons, etc.) and Medicaid, just to name a few. As you have read in the paper and seen on television, the budget has less money in it this year than last. Our state Constitution requires the state Legislature, unlike the federal government, to balance our budget every year. Therefore, we will be scrambling to find funding sources to fill in the budget holes, which means governmental agencies are preparing for budget cuts. It will be an interesting, and sometimes painful, process.

On a more local level, I want to thank the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs for donating vehicles to the police departments in Spavinaw and Langley. It is good to see such cooperation between state and local law enforcement agencies.

Some local school districts have bond elections on March 3. Since I live in the Grove School District, that is the one I am most familiar with. It will replace an expiring bond, so there will be no increase in property tax.  he bonds will be used for upgrading technology in all of the schools, as well as constructing a much needed auditorium/performing arts studio at the high school. Importantly, the auditorium will be constructed to FEMA standards so that it can withstand an F4 tornado and will be large enough to shelter every student and staff at the school. I value our secret ballot process but I don’t mind telling you that I am voting for the bond, and I hope you will give consideration to doing so. The future of our state and nation is in our schools.

It is a pleasure to serve as your state representative. Thanks for the opportunity. Feel free to contact me with issues, concerns or suggestions at dougcox@okhouse.gov or 405-557-7415.

Communicating with customers, GRDA Style

New generation, financial forecast, ongoing engineering projects and updates on other issues were on the agenda last week when Grand River Dam Authority management met with its customers during two days of meetings.

It has become a February tradition for GRDA to set aside two days during the month for these annual meetings that bring together representatives from the municipalities, electric cooperatives and industrial operations that purchase electricity from the Authority. Delivering low-cost, reliable power to these customers 24/7/365 is a primary task, but providing them with information, updates and a chance for open dialogue is also an important part of the Authority’s mission.

Today, GRDA’s primary customer base includes 16 Oklahoma communities, Northeast Oklahoma Electric Cooperative and at least 80 industrial/commercial customers in the MidAmerica Industrial Park. There are also other customers who receive a portion of their wholesale electricity needs from the Authority. At no cost to Oklahoma taxpayers, the electricity GRDA produces to meet these customer needs continues to power progress, attract new business and industry, broaden the state’s tax base and create more jobs in Oklahoma. By 2017, the Oklahoma Department of Commerce estimates that GRDA’s contributions to the state’s economy are projected to reach $689 million.

Of course, that is only possible when long-term, beneficial customer relationships exist. Regular customer meetings, like the series held in mid-February, help to strengthen those relationships and help keep everyone on the same page, so that future challenges and opportunities can be discussed, questioned can be answered and plans for the future can be made.

Headquartered in Vinita, GRDA is Oklahoma’s state-owned electric utility; fully funded by revenues from electric and water sales instead of taxes. GRDA’s low-cost, reliable power touches 75 of 77 counties in the state and serves as an important economic development engine for Oklahoma. At no cost to Oklahoma taxpayers, GRDA also manages 70,000 surface acres of lakes in the state, including Grand Lake, Lake Hudson and the W.R. Holway Reservoir. Today, GRDA’s 500 employees continue to produce the same “power for progress” that has benefited the state for 75 years. The efforts of Team GRDA facilitate over $450 million in economic activity in Oklahoma annually.

NEO launches new and improved website
Miami, Okla. – Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2015 – Officials at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College (NEO) are pleased to announce the launch of their fully-featured website: http://www.neo.edu/. The site officially launched Monday, Feb. 23 and features a new design with a fresh look and is more focused on the end-users’ needs.

neo web site logo“Website redesign evolves much like technology changes. A redesign is standard every two to three years to keep up with the newest trends based on the behaviors of the individuals seeking information,” Bunch said. “Our focus for this website goes with the trends of new students, existing students and parents. Everything else that was not essential to these three core groups we moved off to an intranet site or moved it out of the forefront. We hope you are pleased with the end result as we are.”

The new website features the reorganization of webpages, a less congested homepage, navigation ease for new visitors and an updated design. The website has been a work-in-progress for more than a year.

College President Dr. Jeff Hale appointed a committee of faculty and staff to spearhead the website overhaul project. Leading the committee meetings were Kim Bunch, NEO’s chief information officer, and David Frazier, webmaster and graphic designer.

“A dynamic web presence is critical to success in the highly competitive higher ed market,” Hale said. “Kim Bunch and David Frazier deserve much credit for the new and improved NEO website along with our faculty and students who provided timely and useful feedback. I am very pleased with our collective effort and excited about the new launch.”

NEO’s Information Technology staff arranged multiple meetings on campus with different departments as well as Student Body Government. The meetings served as a preview of the new site, as well as an opportunity for faculty, staff and students to give feedback before the website went live.

NEO’s website is designed to assist new students, parents, current students, faculty and staff navigate with ease to find the admissions page, financial aid, and D2L, the College’s primary online teaching tool, plus so much more. The website focuses on multiple end-users or audiences. As part of its objective to provide critical information to students and parents who are shopping around for colleges, NEO is proud to introduce the new design that will serve as one of the college’s leading recruitment tools.

DENNIS JAMES BRINGS SILENT MOVIE
DOUBLE FEATURE TO COLEMAN THEATRE

MIAMI, Okla. – Dennis James will bring the “Mighty Wurlitzer” pipe organ to life for a double-feature silent movie presentation March 7 and 8 at the Coleman Theatre Beautiful in downtown Miami.

James will present a pair of one-hour silent movies from 1915 – “The Cheat” and “A Fool There Was” – that were considered scandalous, sex-themed features in their day, but are quite tame by modern standards. Both films will be shown at each performance.

Show times are 7:30 p.m. March 7 and 2:30 p.m. March 8.

a-fool-there-was

The_Cheat_FilmPosterTickets are $20 for adults, $15 for seniors and $10 for students and children.
“The Cheat” is an American silent drama film directed by Cecil B. DeMille starring Fannie Ward, Sessue Hayakawa and Jack Dean, Ward’s real-life husband. The silent melodrama was a key film in the early career of Cecil B. DeMille — one that helped establish his reputation as a top-echelon director.

According to DeMille biographer Anne Edwards, the film “set standards of acting, decor, frame composition and lighting which were not surpassed for years.”

“The New York Times called the film ‘sensational trash’ and ‘an old-fashioned melodrama’,” James said.

“The Cheat” also had a profound influence on the early development of filmmaking, especially in its innovative camera techniques and “sexually charged content,” according to James. The movie was named to the National Film Registry in 1993.

“A Fool There Was” is an American silent film drama produced by William Fox and starring Theda Bara. The film was long considered controversial for such risqué intertitle cards as “Kiss me, my fool!” It is also one of the few movies with Bara that still exist today.

This film represents the origin of the term “vamp” (short for vampire), according to James, referring to a femme fatale who causes the moral loss of those she seduced and about how a vampire fascinates then exhausts its victims.

“The full-bosomed Bara became an overnight sensation after her appearance in this melodrama,” James said. “She was a Hollywood creation who mixed ruthlessness and dark erotic sexiness into her numerous roles — she would often appear in risqué transparent costumes in her more than 40 films created from 1914 to 1919.”

In “A Fool There Was,” Bara was dubbed the “Vamp,” and became the screen’s first femme fatale (the first dangerous female in the movies) and first movie sex goddess or sex symbol. Bara delivered her most famous film lines in this film, shown in two title cards, as she draped her arms over her victim and said: “You have ruined me, you devil, and now you discard me!” and “Kiss me, my Fool!”

To purchase tickets or for more information, call the Coleman Theatre at 918-540-2425 or stop by the box office window at 103 North Main in Miami. Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express are accepted.

Mardi Paws Thank You from Second Chance Pet Rescue

There were lots of “Good Times Rolling” and party revelers at the 2015 Mardi Paws event last Saturday night at Big Shots on Monkey Island. The Second Chance Pet Rescue of Grand Lake Board of Directors would like to thank everyone who attended this fun charity benefit. Our special thanks goes to Mark Barham and his band Honky Tonk Prophets. They were the highlight of the evening as people danced the night away. We also thank Joyce and Larry Duke of The Shebang Restaurant for preparing a delicious Cajun Buffet for everyone to enjoy. A very special thank you goes to the many individuals and businesses that donated merchandise and gift certificates to the Mardi Paws Silent Auction. And lastly, we thank our many volunteers who worked long hours to plan and organize this special charity event.

Miami, Oklahoma – Monday, Feb. 23, 2015 – Dean Kruithof, an entrepreneur and new Miami City Manager, will be this year’s keynote speaker during the annual Honors Banquet on Monday, March 9th at 6:30 p.m. in the Calcagno Family Ballroom.

During the Honors Banquet, NEO will recognize those students who were named to the 2014-15 President’s Honor Roll and Deans’ Honor Roll, as well as those listed in the latest ‘Who’s Who Among American Junior Colleges’ publication and the Top 10 Freshmen.

“NEO is a significant part of my life, not only from a professional perspective but from a personal one as well. The caring and welcoming environment found at the College, coupled with its academic excellence, often enhances a student’s sense of self-worth that assists them with future success,” Kruithof said. “That was certainly my experience.”

Kruithof grew up in Miami and graduated from Miami High School. Afterward, he attended NEO where he graduated with his associate’s degree and then Oklahoma State University where he earned his bachelor’s degree in political science. Kruithof also earned his master’s degree in public administration from OSU.

Kruithof brings more than 30 years of government management experience to Miami including a stint as city administrator for the City of Branson, Missouri.

He was officially appointed Miami’s City Manager in Oct. 2014.

Prior to his employment with the City of Branson, Kruithof served as deputy city administrator for the City of Fort Smith, Arkansas, where he led a cooperative transfer of 8,000 acres to Fort Smith which had the immediate ability to facilitate development.

When he is not working, Kruithof said he enjoys bicycling, hiking, canoeing and snorkeling. He and his wife Cynthia have been married 35 years.

“It is an honor to have a former graduate of the college address NEO students who has excelled in academics, civic leadership and service,” said NEO President Dr. Jeff Hale. “Dean is an excellent role model and attributes a great deal of his personal success to his Miami and NEO roots.”

LENDONWOOD GARDENS SEEKS ARTISTS AND ARTISANS TO PARTICIPATE IN 2015 ART IN THE GARDEN SHOW

Area artists and artisans are invited to show and sell their works at the 2015 Art in the Garden show set for Saturday, May 2, in Lendonwood Gardens, located at 1308 Har-Ber Road in Grove.

On the same day, Lendonwood also will be hosting its Community Open House, in which the public is invited to explore, at no charge, the eight-acre garden during a particularly beautiful time of year. Rain date for the combined event is Saturday, May 9.

There is no charge for art exhibitors to participate in the show. A deposit of $25 reserves booth space and is reimbursable to artists who participate.
lendonwood3
In the past, Art in the Garden has featured works by young school-age artists as well as professional artists and accomplished craftsmen. Participants typically include potters, broom-makers, wood-turners, quilters, jewelry-makers, sculptors and carvers, in addition to artists working with oils, watercolors and other media.

“We are so pleased to bring together a diverse and talented group of artists and artisans against the garden’s beautiful springtime backdrop,” said Cindy Reynolds, Lendonwood board member who is coordinating the event.

Reynolds said the board decided to combine the Art in the Garden event with the Community Open House, because it offers a perfect opportunity for guests to explore both the arts and the botanical garden at the same time.

Exhibitors interested in participating in Art in the Garden are asked to contact Lendonwood at 918-786-2938 for more information and to reserve booth space for the event.

Lendonwood displays large collections of colorful azaleas, rhododendrons, dogwoods, daylilies, Japanese maples, hostas and more. The garden is open year-round during daylight hours.

GOLF TIP OF THE WEEK
Sand Shots
As most of you know it is a good idea to open your club face to help get out of the sand.
HOWEVER, if the ball is plugged (fried egg), it is best to close the face a little. NEVER scoop the ball on any golf shot including the sand.

The company’s most successful salesperson was surrounded by HER contemporaries at a sales meeting.
“Mary, I don’t know how you do it every year,” one of the exclaimed. You are always the top producer. What’s your secret?”
Mary just smiled and said “I just follow certain rules. I know my territory, and I know my products. I follow up and I work hard. But when I’m out with my customers there is another rule that I think is the main reason for my success.”
The other sales reps leaned forward for the answer.
“I make sure to miss my putts by at least 6 inches.”

This and That
The unemployment rate for Mayes County is 4.8 percent and it is 5 percent in Delaware County, according to the latest statistics available.
Doug Cox2 In a recent survey of parents who opted for private schools for their children, their number one concern was “better student discipline.” I find it interesting that while public schools are concerned about losing students and funding to private schools that many public school districts do not allow corporal punishment – spanking – of a student, in spite of parental concerns about discipline. The second reason given for moving a child to a private school was “better learning environment” followed by “smaller class size.”
The nation’s leading research in rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis and lupus is being done right here in Oklahoma at the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation.
The poultry industry is a major economic force in our state. Oklahoma produces around 726 million eggs each year. Last year, our state raised 206 million birds, producing 1.3 billion pounds of chicken for consumption at a value of $824 million. Poultry is the third-most valuable livestock commodity for Oklahoma, ranking behind cattle and hogs. Nationwide, the poultry industry provides almost two million jobs. They certainly are an economic boost to Northeast Oklahoma.
Free smoke alarms are available to the deaf. They include a bed shaker, and a loud , low-frequency bedside alert signal, as well as a strobe light. They can be obtained at www.ok.gov/abletech/fire_safety/index.html.
It is estimated that in the next eight years Delaware and Mayes Counties will receive $196,895,410 worth of road improvements. This is according to the Oklahoma Department of Transportation’s “eight-year plan.”
Thanks for allowing me to serve as your state representative. I can be reached at dougcox@okhouse.gov or 405-557-7415.

Senator Wayne Shaw Helps Oklahoma Scenic Rivers Commission

As lawmakers enter into the fifth week of the legislative session, our work continues at a fast pace.  Last week was the deadline for all bills to be heard in committee and now we are in the process of hearing the bills passed in committee on the Senate floor.

One of my bills, Senate Bill 155, passed in the General Government committee before the deadline and also passed the full Senate earlier this week.  Senate Bill 155 would provide a dual office holding exemption for certain Scenic Rivers Commission officers, which would allow the Oklahoma Scenic Rivers Commission to hire off-duty municipal and county law enforcement officers as part-time river patrol officers.   This is particularly crucial in the summer months when additional enforcement assistance is needed when the weather warms up and more people in our area are enjoying the outdoor amenities our district has to offer.

senator wayne shawDuring an interim study last fall, lawmakers heard from OSRC Capt. Bill James, a former Oklahoma Highway Patrolman, and he addressed the need for increased patrol to keep the altercations often fueled by a day of drinking on the river under control.   He voiced his concerns that it is currently very difficult to control dangerous situations, including fights, on the Illinois River with the reduced number of law officers available, and while it may appear on paper that arrests since 2012 have declined, the reduced arrests are reflective of the OSRC’s law enforcement shortage and not an improvement in behavior.   Capt. James shared figures with the committee indicating there were 30 DUI arrests in 2014 as compared to 54 in 2012 and 55 in 2013, which again, were indicative of fewer officers on duty and not due to an actual drop in delinquent behavior. In the same manner, warnings issued have dropped from a 2012 level of 1,066 to only 694 in 2014.

In an effort to address these concerns, I co-authored SB 155 with Rep. Will Fourkiller, which would boost the number of workers who would be eligible to be hired as part-time employees for the Oklahoma Scenic Rivers Commission.  An adequately staffed workforce is crucial to the commission, but with a stretched budget and restrictive hiring requirements, it has made it challenging to maintain a staff large enough to match the demands of the summer crowd.  This bill passed in the Senate this week and now moves to the House for consideration.

Throughout the legislative session I will be keeping you aware of Senate news and the business of the state.  Please feel free to contact me at the state Capitol by calling (405) 521-5574 or by email at shaw@oksenate.gov.

Har-Ber Village Museum Opens for the Season Sunday, March 15

Har-Ber Village Museum opens for its 47th season on Sunday, March 15. The pioneer-era village, complete with Visitor Center, The Country Store and Crafters at Har-Ber Village gift shops, Nature Trail, Picnic Pavilion and Event Tent allows visitors to experience the area’s history and ecology as well as view collections of antiques and memorabilia.

ruthcooks“We continue to focus on families with children by adding hands-on experiences for our visitors,” said Director Amelia Chamberlain. “The Living History cabin will soon have a working fireplace thanks to a community grant from Grove Rotary Foundation, and we will be adding new vegetable and perennial beds in our heirloom garden.”

The Crafters at Har-Ber Village Shop opened for the first time late last fall. This year the shop will have expanded hours and merchandise. A series of historic craft workshops featuring a wide variety of choices from needlecraft to flint knapping to weaving to soap making and more will be offered. “We encourage you to check the Village website throughout the season to stay up-to-date on activities, event information and programs,” continued Chamberlain.

On Saturday, March 14, Har-Ber Village kicks off its membership campaign with a members-only reception, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. “We’ll have a variety of activities our members are sure to enjoy scheduled throughout the afternoon! If someone who is not a member wants to attend, they may purchase a membership online or at the reception,” said Chamberlain.

During this afternoon’s event, members will receive a reproduction Frisco Railroad train ticket at the Print Shop; and sample refreshments—some of which were made from recipes from the Harvey House, a popular chain of restaurants located along the Santa Fe Railroad. They’ll be able to listen to donors tell the stories behind artifacts on display in the Railroad exhibit and view The Tulsa Garden Railroad Club’s model railroad display.

At 1:00 p.m., NSU History Professor Bill Corbett will highlight the events surrounding the Noel, Missouri, train explosion that took place on Sunday, August 3, 1969.

Doris Schlafke’s father worked for Illinois Central Railroad for 43 years (it was called the mainline of mid-America). Transferred to several different communities, he ended up in Chicago. The company thought so highly of him that it provided him with his own private railroad car. Doris inherited her father’s memorabilia and then donated several items to Har-Ber Village. At 2:00 p.m., Doris and her husband Don will share details about these items currently on display in the railroad exhibit.

Local dentist Dr. Harry W. Halterman, after a busy day in the office, would retire to his garage for three or four hours of relaxation therapy working on trains while listening to classical music—which he compared to the sound of steam engines. Both were music to his ears. Norma Halterman, in loving memory of her husband, donated the train to Har-Ber Village in 2009. In 2014, the train became part of a larger display on trains and transportation. At 3:00 p.m., Norma, who named her husband’s train “Wasted Money RR” will be on hand to share her memories of her husband and his hobby. “Harry’s father, Dr. I.L. Halterman, was also a dentist and his office furniture and dental tools are on display at Har-Ber Village,” explained Chamberlain.

The Tulsa Garden Railroad Club, founded in January 1997, will display mini-modules which will feature three trains running at one time. The trains are mostly in the scale range of 1:29 which are approximately twice the size of the well known three-rail Lionel trains that many grew up with as kids. The Club’s purpose is to encourage and broaden the knowledge of large scale garden railroad activities. It is open to anyone interested in large-scale outdoor or indoor model railroading. The Club will be hosting the Garden Railroad National Convention in Tulsa in 2017.

Railroads: Tracks Across America will be playing continuously in Building #3 during the event. Ride along with this nostalgic collection that takes you to a romantic place where steam rises from the dense population centers in the East to the snow-packed mountains of the West.

Members attending the reception will have a chance to win the exciting board game “A Ticket to Ride.” The drawing for the winner will take place at 4:00 p.m. Winner need not be present to win. Be sure to R.S.V.P. for this event by calling 918-786-6446 or emailing director@har-bervillage.com.

Har-Ber Village Museum hours are Monday through Saturday, 9:00am to 5:00pm; Sundays, 12:30-5:00pm. Admission is $10 for adults; $7.50 for seniors 62+; $5 for children 6-13; under 6 and members free.
